First Year Programme

Mixed ability classes as a result of the belief that students can develop over of the year and also in the belief that mixed ability grouping can help students become more confident as learners.
A Transition to a new school programme, in order to ensure that the changeover from primary to secondary school is as smooth as possible. This is promoted by class teachers and year heads and aims to help all new pupils settle in to life in the High School with the minimal amount of difficulty. Recent research has shown that first year students make more progress in reading and mathematics in a school where there is a strong emphasis on helping them to settle in. Topics covered include study skills, time management, school rules, anti-bullying, and of course induction to the High School.
A Learning Support service which includes contact with primary schools and whose aim is to help students who find certain aspects of school to be difficult. Students may receive help in groups of 1 to 4, and have found this service to be of immense benefit in building confidence in relation to their learning.
A Language Support Programme where specialist classes in English are given to students who are new to this country.
A Health Promotion Programme.
- Organised tours to Outdoor Education Centres, Theatre/Film Outings.
- U-13 Football, Hurling and Soccer Competitions.
- Lunchtime Clubs such as the highly successful Chess and Computer Clubs and Music club.
Subject choice in first year is extensive and all pupils are given the opportunity to experience all the subjects on offer in the High School in order to enable them to make an informed subject choice for their Junior Certificate.
